Why could scarifying be good for my lawn?

Small amounts of thatch can be broken down naturally by the bacteria found in the soil under your lawn, turning it into nutrients that help the grass to grow. However, there is often an excessive buildup of thatch that will require to be removed manually if your lawn is to flourish and look good. Such a damaging mat of thatch acts like a cap on the soil, preventing the flow of oxygen, moisture and carbon dioxide. Although it’s possible to remove thatch by raking, scarifying is more effective and gets the job done much more quickly.
