Overseeding
Overseeding is the process of scattering new grass seeds on to your existing lawn to improve its health and appearance with the fresh growth that results. Over time, as the grass plants that make up your lawn age, your lawn in effect becomes tired and healthy green growth becomes more sparse. This is because grass plants have a limited lifespan and their rate of reproduction slows with time. Furthermore, grass on lawns cannot naturally regenerate the way it would in the wild because a tidy lawn is usually mowed before enough of the plants reach the stage of producing seed heads.
As a result, your lawn will inevitably come to look thinner and less lush and problem yellowed or barren patches can develop. Your lawn will also be more susceptible to weeds and moss because thinned grass that’s lacking in vigour allows these “invaders” the space and opportunity to establish themselves.

How will overseeding benefit my lawn?
Overseeding will thicken the good, green growth on your lawn and so improve its appearance as well as regenerating brown or barren patches.
As your lawn matures and the grass becomes thinner, you are likely to see an increasing amount of weeds and moss establish themselves because the ageing, thinning grass is less able to compete with them for sunlight and nutrients and to basically crowd them out. As a result, as well as being key to keeping your lawn looking good, overseeding is important for ongoing weed- and moss-control. The best defence against weeds and moss on your lawn is a thick and healthy carpeting of grass.
If areas of your lawn are in shade, growth there will be inhibited and bald patches can occur. Overseeding can solve this problem, too.
Overseeding is also often a final stage in the process of ridding your lawn of moss and is necessary in this context because, when moss has been killed and then removed from your lawn by raking or scarifying, it can leave you temporarily with excessively thin grass.
